According to Precious Ramotswe, the owner of Botswana's No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, "There is no problem so great it cannot be solved by a cup of bush tea." Growing up in the country, Precious learned a great many things from her father: to rely on her wits, patience and memory, and most importantly, to follow her dreams, no matter what. And so, for her beloved country of Botswana, Africa and its people, Precious has started her detective career in Gaborone determined to do good with the time that God has been given her.

Grace Makutsi is Mma Ramotswe's awkward but extremely efficient secretary. Mma Makutsi, originally from Bobonong, Botswana, is a graduate of the Botswana Secretarial College, earning unprecedented high marks on her final examinations. Despite her obvious typing proficiency, until Mma Ramotswe hired her, the stiff but excitable Mma Makutsi had been passed over for potential jobs in favor of younger, less-skilled but more precocious classmates.

BK is owner of the Last Chance Hair Salon, next door to Precious' No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency in the neighborhood of Kgale Hill, on the outskirts of Gaborone. The flamboyant hairdresser is of the opinion that his styling work and detective work are very similar. Both jobs can totally change peoples' lives in an afternoon: Precious by solving the problems in their lives and BK by solving the problems of their hair.

Considered the finest mechanic in Botswana, Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni, the proud proprietor of the Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors garage, insists, "We only look after cars we can make friends with." Although he is a widower and a bit concerned about his weight, the single Mr. Matekoni is not a bitter man. Born and raised in Tlokweng, he possesses the traditional Botswanan values of kindness and virtue - just the kind of traits, Precious Ramotswe truly appreciates.
