Barry is married to Mary and has no children. He grew up in the Fields, and is half-brother to Simon Price.

Arf is the 16-year-old son of Simon and Ruth and has a 12-year-old brother named Paul. Fats Wall is his best friend; they’ve known each other since they were little, although recently they have both found themselves drifting apart.

Colin is married to Tess and father of Fats (Stuart). He is Deputy Head of Winterdown School, the local comprehensive, but badly suited to state education.

Miles is the son of Howard and Shirley. He is married to Samantha and father to twin girls, Lexie and Libby. Together with Barry Fairbrother, he set up a solicitors firm in the village; Miles relies on Barry as a friend and colleague.

Pagford Parish Councillor and general practitioner, Parminder is married to Vikram, with whom she has a teenage daughter, Sukhvinder.

Simon is a violent bully who terrorizes his wife Ruth, and sons Arf and Paul.

Stuart, also known as “Fats”, is the son of Colin and Tess. He’s been best friends with Arf Price since they were little, but recently they have both found themselves drifting apart.

Tess is married to deputy head teacher Colin, with whom she adopted Fats (Stuart). She is a counselor at the same school as her husband, providing ‘welfare support’ to the students.
